Summer as well as winter, the mountain railways in our near and far surroundings enable all summiteers, no matter how sporty and experienced, to comfortably explore the world around the Zugspitze and to experience it more intensely. Here you will find the most important railways around Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Zugspitzbahn

Germany's highest peak - Top of Germany

At 2,962 metres above sea level, the Zugspitze in southern Bavaria outdoes every other mountain in Germany. Thanks to convenient lifts, you don’t need to be a tenacious mountaineer to get to the summit. Visitors from all over the world love the mountain for its glacier feeling, four-country panoramic views and summit restaurant.

Impressive 360° panorama

On the very top, Germany’s most beautiful roof terrace is a popular spot to enjoy the unique 360° panorama of 400 alpine peaks in Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland year-round at eye level with the golden summit cross. Look out into the distance – up to 250 kilometres on clear days – in winter and high summer.

Alpspitzbahn

The Alpspitzbahn is one of the most popular mountain railways in Werdenfelser Land. Because with it you can get to the striking rock massif of the Alpspitze in around nine minutes. With the Alpspitzbahn you leave the tree line behind after a few minutes and immerse yourself in the alpine landscape of the Osterfelderkopf. Interesting tours to the Kreuzeck and Hausberg or down into the Höllental via the Hupfleitenjoch and the Knappenhäuser start from the summit station. For via ferrata climbers, one of the most beautiful and popular via ferratas in Germany starts just a few meters from the Alpspitzbahn. The Alpspitz-Ferrata takes you over 600 meters of altitude difference up to the summit of the Alpspitze, where you can enjoy one of the most beautiful summit views in the region. Directly at the Osterfeldkopf you can also find entertainment on the summit adventure trail or on the Alpspix, without taking any risks in the remote terrain. In winter, the Alpspitzbahn is primarily used for skiing in the Classic area. From the Osterfelderkopf it goes over the Hochalm, past the Bernadein and Längenfelder lifts, down to the Kreuzeck and on to the local mountain.

Mellow mountain adventure for the whole family

An effortless ascent with the Wankbahn cable car gives families and senior citizens the opportunity to enjoy the mountain of panoramas offered by Mount Wank. Fabulous all-round views open up from the 1,780 metre peak vis-à-vis from the Zugspitze, encompassing the Esterberg, Ammer, Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Loisachtal Valley and stretch to the outskirts of Munich.

Eckbauerbahn

The Eckbauerbahn is a detachable monocable gondola that runs in Garmisch-Partenkirchen from the Olympic ski stadium to the Eckbauer (1237 m). The cable car, which opened in 1956, was decommissioned in 2018 and replaced by a new cable car that has been in operation since 2019.

Hausbergbahn

The Hausbergbahn is only open in winter for the ski season. In just seven minutes you can reach a height of almost 1,310 meters and are in the middle of the ski area around Garmisch-Partenkirchen's local mountain.
