Schloss Herrenchiemsee
In 1873, King Ludwig II of Bavaria acquired Herreninsel as the location for his Herrenchiemsee New Palace. As an image of Versailles, this palace was to become a "temple of glory" for King Louis XIV of France, whom the Bavarian monarch worshiped without limits. A total of 13 planning phases preceded the realization. In 1878 the construction of the "Bavarian Versailles" was started according to plans by Georg Dollmann. In 1886, when King Ludwig II died, the palace was not yet complete. Some parts were later removed.
In about 80 minutes you drive along part of the German Alpine Road via Bad Tölz to the Chiemgau. From Prien/Stock there are regular boats to Herreninsel. You can find timetables for the Chiemsee-Bahn and the Chiemsee-Schiffahrt at www.chiemsee-schifffahrt.de.
